Is Telegram the new Skype?

Skype has been the go-to app for camshows for over 20 years. But now that Skype is closing, fans and performers alike are looking for the best alternative.

Some have followed the automatic migration to Teams as it's the easiest option. But for many, Teams is too closely associated with work and are reluctant to risk mixing up their personal and professional accounts.

A suitable alternative could be Telegram.

TheBestFlex is not affiliated with Telegram, nor do we endorse it. But when we look at what made Skype so great for camshows, Telegram seems to offer a lot of the same features.

  • Anonymity with a username - You can maintain your anonymity by setting a username, rather than using your email address or phone number.
  • Video calls - Telegram offers high-quality video calls, with no time limits.
  • Messaging - Telegram was built primarily as a messaging app, so you can easily send messages.
  • Syncs on all devices - Telegram syncs across all your devices, so you can use it on your phone, tablet, and computer. This is great for camshows, as you can message as you need to on your phone, and switch to a larger device for the show.

If you decide to use Telegram, here are a few extra tips:

  • Set a username - This lets others find or see you with just a username. Go to Settings > Set a username.
  • Hide your phone number - Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number and set it to 'Nobody' to avoid sharing your number. People will just see your username.
  • Turn off contact notifications - Go to Settings > Notifications > New Contacts, toggle to off if you don't want to know when someone in your contacts joins Telegram.
  • Turn off contact sync - Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Data Settings > Contacts and toggle off sync contacts. This will keep your device contacts separate from your Telegram contacts.

App features change all the time, so look out for new updates in the app.

Remember to always use FlexCheck every time you use a new contact method, even for regular contacts.
